The first phase covers a 13.3-kilometre stretch between Maan and R.K. Laxman Museum with 12 stations. Services on this section are expected to begin soon, bringing faster and more convenient travel for thousands of commuters.
Once the entire corridor is completed, the metro line will extend to District Court Station, where it will connect with the existing MahaMetro network. This integration will improve connectivity across different parts of Pune.
One of the biggest advantages of the project is the reduction in travel time. The journey between Shivajinagar and Hinjawadi, which currently takes around one and a half hours by road during peak traffic, is expected to be completed in just 45 minutes.
Pune Metro Line 3 will operate using a 750-volt DC Third Rail System, making it one of the few metro corridors in India to use this technology. Instead of drawing power from overhead electric wires, trains will receive electricity directly through a power rail installed alongside the tracks.
The same technology is already being used in metro systems such as Kolkata Metro and Bengaluru’s Namma Metro. Pune will now join the list of cities using this modern electrification system.
Compared to traditional overhead wire systems, the third rail technology reduces infrastructure and maintenance costs. It also lowers the chances of power interruptions and improves the overall efficiency of metro operations.
The project will also use Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC), an advanced digital signalling system that allows trains to operate safely with shorter gaps between them. This enables more frequent metro services and reduces waiting time for passengers.
The new metro line will connect several important locations, including Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjawadi, Wakad, Baner, Balewadi, University Circle and Shivajinagar, making travel easier for office workers, students and daily commuters.
With the introduction of CBTC technology and the third rail system, Pune Metro Line 3 is expected to provide faster, safer and more reliable public transport, helping reduce traffic congestion across the city’s rapidly growing IT corridor.
