The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) Commissioner gave the required approval for the first phase on July 23. Nearly three weeks have passed since then, but commuters are still waiting for the Metro to open.
The delay has raised questions among residents and IT employees who had been expecting the new Metro service to provide relief from the daily traffic congestion in Hinjewadi.
According to allegations being raised by local residents and commuters, the delay is linked to the government’s plan to have Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurate the project.
The Chief Minister’s Office has reportedly written to the Prime Minister’s Office seeking a date for the inauguration. However, a date has not yet been finalised.
As a result, even though the first phase is ready and has received the required approval, the Hinjewadi Metro service has not yet been opened to passengers.
The PMRDA has said that the service will be started as soon as the inauguration date is finalised by the Prime Minister’s Office.
The Metro corridor is planned in two broad phases. The first phase runs from Maan to Balewadi and has 12 completed stations. The second phase is planned from Baner High Street to Shivajinagar and will be taken up as the next stage of the project.
For thousands of IT employees travelling to and from Hinjewadi every day, the Metro is expected to provide an alternative to the area’s long-standing traffic problems.
The delay has therefore led to frustration among commuters, with many questioning why a Metro line that has already received approval cannot be opened for public use.
Citizens are now waiting for the authorities to announce a clear date for the launch of passenger services.
