The metro route is expected to be a major relief for lakhs of daily commuters, especially IT professionals travelling to and from Hinjewadi. But despite repeated announcements, the project appears to be falling behind schedule once again.
The Rs 8,313 crore project has already seen 97.40 percent of its budget spent, but actual physical work has reached only 94.58 percent. This gap between spending and on-ground progress has raised fresh questions over project execution and delays.
One major reason behind the slowdown is labour shortage. Reports suggest many workers involved in the project returned to West Bengal due to elections, affecting the pace of technical and finishing work.
Another key issue is incomplete work at several stations. Out of the 12 stations planned in the first phase, many are still waiting for passenger facilities, escalators and finishing work to be completed.
There is also growing concern at the administrative level over repeated deadline changes and delays in technical completion updates from the executing agency.
The first phase includes important stations such as Megapolis Society, Quadron Business Park, Infosys Phase 2, Wipro, Wakad Chowk and Balewadi Stadium. These stations are expected to serve a large number of office-goers once operations begin.
Officials had earlier announced multiple launch dates, including March 2025, April 2026 and May 31, 2026. Now, even the latest June 15 deadline looks difficult to meet.
Project officials have said they are working to make the first 12 stations operational as soon as possible. However, the line will also need inspection and approval from the Metro safety commissioner before opening for passengers.
At the current pace, many now believe services may begin only in July, while full completion of the 23.2-km corridor could stretch beyond October 2026.
For now, Pune commuters are left waiting once again as the city’s much-anticipated Hinjewadi Metro project misses another target.
