Pune’s long-awaited Pune Metro Line 3 is set to begin operations by June 15, bringing major relief to thousands of daily commuters travelling to and from the busy Hinjewadi IT hub.

Officials said the metro service will start in phases, with the first 12 stations on the Hinjewadi side becoming operational in the initial launch. The remaining 11 stations are expected to open in October, making the full route functional.

Metro Line 3 stretches over 23.2 km and connects Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar. The new route is expected to significantly cut travel time between Pune city and its fast-growing IT corridor, which faces heavy traffic congestion every day.

PMRDA Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari said the line was earlier expected to open by May 31, but the agency implementing the project requested a short extension, pushing the launch to June 15.

He added that the trial run on the entire metro route has been completed successfully, clearing the way for the first phase of operations.

Once operational till Shivajinagar, Line 3 will also connect with Pune’s existing metro network, including Line 1 from PCMC to Swargate and Line 2 from Vanaz to Ramwadi. This will improve metro connectivity across the city and make travel easier for passengers switching routes.

The project is India’s first metro corridor built under a public-private partnership model. It is being developed by Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited, a joint venture involving the Tata Group and Siemens.

Officials said details about train timings and ticket fares will be announced closer to the launch date.

French transport company Keolis will handle operations and maintenance of the corridor for 10 years, including trains, stations and ticketing systems.

The 12 stations expected to open by June 15 are Megapolis Society in Maan, Quadron Business Park, Dohler, Infosys Phase 2, Wipro Technologies Phase 2, Pall India, Shivaji Chowk, Courtyard by Marriott, Wakad Chowk, Balewadi Stadium, Orchid Hotel and Ramnagar.

The remaining stations, including Baner, Savitribai Phule Pune University, RBI, Agriculture College and Shivajinagar, are expected to become operational in October, completing the full metro stretch.
