The original plan was to start operations only up to 12 stations. However, five more stations have now been completed, allowing the entire 17-station stretch to be considered for the first phase of passenger services.
The metro will connect Hinjewadi IT Park with central Pune, a route that has been eagerly awaited by commuters.
The 12-station stretch from Maan to R.K. Laxman Museum in Balewadi has already received approval from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety to begin passenger operations.
The remaining five stations have also been completed. Their safety inspection is expected to take place next week.
The inauguration of the metro service is being planned through an online event with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. If the final approvals are completed as planned, the service could start this month.
The 17 stations between Maan and District Court are Maan, MIDC Circle, Maan Bus Depot, Hinjewadi Phase 2 Circle 2, Hinjewadi Phase 2 Circle 1, Padmabhushan Chowk, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk, Hinjewadi Phase 1, Wakad Chowk, Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, MITCON Balewadi, R.K. Laxman Museum, Aundh, Sakaal Nagar, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Agriculture College and District Court.
At present, travelling between Hinjewadi and Pune city can take around one and a half to two hours, depending on traffic. After the metro becomes operational, the journey is expected to take around 45 minutes.
The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has said work on the remaining six stations will be completed and the entire route is planned to become operational by the end of December.
