The decision comes after the Metro Railway Safety Commissioner (CMRS) cleared the first 12 stations for passenger operations. The safety regulator is expected to inspect five more stations next week.
The 23.23-km Metro Line 3 will connect Hinjewadi with Shivajinagar through key areas such as Wakad, Balewadi and Baner. The line is expected to provide an alternative to the busy road network between Hinjewadi, Baner and central Pune.
PMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Abhijit Choudhary said preparations are underway to start passenger services after the required safety approvals are received.
According to Choudhary, CMRS inspection of the five additional stations is expected next week. A virtual inauguration could take place by the end of this month, although the final date is yet to be confirmed.
Six stations will not be opened initially. These include Laxminagar, Balewadi Phata, Baner Gaon, Baner, Reserve Bank of India and Shivajinagar.
Officials said work is still underway at these stations and nearby areas. The stations will be opened after the pending work is completed and the necessary safety clearances are obtained.
The decision to start services at 17 stations means passengers will not have to wait for the entire Metro corridor to be completed before using the line.
CMRS will play an important role in the next stage. The safety regulator will assess the stations and related infrastructure before granting the required approvals. PMRDA will then finalise the operational plan.
Earlier, PMRDA had planned to start services at 12 stations by the end of June. However, the opening was delayed due to pending construction and infrastructure work.
The inauguration of Metro Line 3 is likely to be held virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The final date will depend on CMRS clearance and the Prime Minister’s schedule. Officials have also clarified that the inauguration is being planned separately and is not linked to any political programme in Baramati.
