The new metro line will also benefit passengers travelling to and from Pune Railway Station and the airport. However, commuters will currently need to change metro lines or use feeder buses to reach these locations.
Pune Railway Station has a metro station located directly opposite the railway station. It is part of the Aqua Line, which connects with the Pink Line at Civil Court Metro Station.
Passengers arriving at Pune Railway Station can take the Aqua Line and get down at Civil Court. From there, they can change to the Pink Line and continue their journey towards Hinjewadi. This will give commuters an alternative to road travel, especially during peak traffic hours.
Pune Airport, however, does not yet have direct metro connectivity. Passengers can travel on the Aqua Line to Ramwadi Metro Station and then take a PMPML feeder bus to the airport.
These feeder buses operate at intervals of around 15 minutes, providing an alternative for passengers travelling between the metro network and the airport.
Meanwhile, MahaMetro is planning a new metro route between Kalyani Nagar and Pune Airport to provide direct connectivity. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed route is currently being prepared. Once completed, the project is expected to make airport travel more convenient.
The Pink Line is also expected to benefit thousands of employees working at Hinjewadi IT Park. More than 50 per cent of the workforce in the IT hub comes from outside Pune district or other parts of Maharashtra. Many employees regularly travel to their hometowns using Pune Railway Station or the airport.
The new metro connection will make these journeys easier. It will also help tourists and business travellers staying in areas such as Baner, Balewadi and Hinjewadi travel to different parts of Pune.
Before the Pink Line became operational, travelling from central Pune to Hinjewadi IT Park could take one to two hours during peak traffic. Heavy congestion, particularly in the morning and evening, often caused delays for office commuters.
With the new metro service, passengers can now avoid much of this road traffic. Those travelling from the railway station can change trains at Civil Court, while airport passengers can use the feeder bus service from Ramwadi.
Overall, the Pink Line is expected to improve connectivity between Hinjewadi and Pune city. However, direct metro connectivity to Pune Airport will be needed to provide a more convenient travel option for airport passengers.
