A 150-metre skywalk being built in Shivajinagar is nearing completion and is expected to be ready by the end of August. The facility will provide a direct connection between Pune Metro’s Line 1 and Line 3, linking the Swargate–Pimpri Chinchwad corridor with the Shivajinagar-Hinjawadi route.
The project is being developed by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro) at an estimated cost of ₹5.5 crore.
Unlike a conventional footbridge, the new structure will connect the concourse and paid areas of the two stations. This means passengers will be able to transfer from one Metro line to the other without leaving the station or crossing the road.
At present, passengers changing between the two corridors do not have a fully integrated interchange. The new facility is expected to make the transfer faster and more convenient, especially for regular commuters travelling between different parts of Pune.
It could also be particularly useful for employees travelling towards the Hinjawadi IT corridor once Line 3 becomes operational.
MahaMetro Additional General Manager Chandrashekhar Tambwekar said the skywalk has been planned to provide a direct connection between the two Metro lines while keeping passengers away from road traffic near Kamgar Putla.
However, finishing the construction will not mean an immediate opening for passengers. The structure will first have to undergo a mandatory inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS). Public access will be allowed only after the required safety clearance is received.
The opening will also depend on the launch of the Line 3 station at Shivajinagar. The skywalk is expected to become operational once the station is opened and all necessary safety approvals are in place.
The covered connection will allow passengers with valid tickets to move between the paid areas of Line 1 and Line 3 without passing through exit gates.
The facility is expected to strengthen the connection between Pune’s existing Metro network and Hinjawadi IT corridor, one of the region’s biggest employment hubs. Once Line 3 starts operations, the new interchange could make daily travel between central Pune and Hinjawadi more convenient.
