At present, Metro services on the PCMC-Swargate and Vanaz-Ramwadi routes run with three-coach trains. However, officials believe the number of daily commuters could increase significantly once the new corridor becomes operational in the coming months.
The 23-km Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro corridor will connect the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi with central Pune. It will also offer interchange facilities with the existing Metro network, making travel easier for thousands of passengers.
According to Pune Metro officials, the two operational Metro corridors recorded an average daily ridership of around 1.87 lakh passengers in March 2026. With the addition of the new route, the figure is expected to rise to nearly 2.75 lakh to 3 lakh passengers every day.
Maha-Metro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar said the Metro administration has started planning for future demand and will begin the process of procuring larger trains to handle the expected increase in commuters.
He said the Metro system is being prepared not only for the immediate rise in ridership but also for long-term growth, with a target of serving nearly six lakh passengers daily in the future.
Currently, Pune Metro operates 18 trains on the Vanaz-Ramwadi route and 16 trains on the PCMC-Swargate corridor. Officials said additional trains will be introduced as needed to support the growing number of commuters and maintain smooth operations across the network.
