Pune: A software engineer from Hinjawadi has allegedly lost ₹7 lakh after falling victim to a fake IT job placement scam operated by cybercriminals posing as recruitment agency officials.

The 36-year-old complainant, who works for an IT company in Hinjawadi, had uploaded his resume on several job portals while looking for better career opportunities.

According to police, he received an email in April 2025 from a placement firm claiming it could help him secure a better job with a leading IT company.

The fraudsters first asked him to register with the agency before arranging interviews with potential employers. They shared a payment link and asked him to deposit registration fees to begin the recruitment process.

After the initial payment, the engineer was informed that interviews had been arranged. However, the suspects continued demanding more money at different stages of the hiring process.

Police said the victim transferred ₹7 lakh between April 2025 and January 2026 after being given various reasons for additional payments.

Whenever he followed up about the promised job, the fraudsters allegedly demanded more money, claiming it was required to issue an offer letter and complete the recruitment process.

After months of waiting, the engineer realised he had been cheated and approached the police.

Following a preliminary inquiry, Hinjawadi Police registered a case and launched an investigation into the cyber fraud. Officials are now working to trace those involved in the fake placement racket.

Police have advised job seekers to verify the credentials of recruitment agencies before making any payments. They also warned that genuine employers and placement firms generally do not ask candidates to pay money for interviews or job offers.
