The much-awaited Pune Metro Line 3 connecting Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar is a step closer to opening, with inauguration plans now underway after receiving a key safety clearance.

If everything goes as planned, passengers, including thousands of IT employees, could begin travelling on the metro during the first week of August.

The first phase of the project, stretching from Maan-Hinjewadi to R.K. Laxman Museum (Balewadi), has received provisional authorisation from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), which functions under the Ministry of Civil Aviation. This marks a major milestone before the start of commercial operations.

According to officials, the inauguration is expected to be held in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The administration is currently coordinating with both offices to finalise a suitable date.

The first phase covers nearly 13 km and includes 12 metro stations, connecting the Hinjewadi IT hub with Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

The CMRS team carried out a detailed inspection of the route between July 5 and July 8. After verifying the safety systems, signalling, tracks, power supply, fire safety, telecommunications, rolling stock, and other technical aspects, approval for passenger operations was granted on July 23.

With the clearance, the metro is now capable of operating at a maximum speed of 80 km/h under the CBTC signalling system in ATP mode. The corridor will run on a 750-volt DC third rail power system.

The launch of the first phase is expected to provide major relief to thousands of daily commuters travelling to Hinjewadi IT Park, one of Pune’s busiest employment hubs. The new metro service is also expected to reduce road congestion and offer a faster and more reliable public transport option.

PMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari said that the CMRS approval is a significant milestone for the project. He added that the remaining formalities are being completed on priority so that passenger services can begin at the earliest. According to him, the metro will play an important role in easing traffic congestion and strengthening Pune’s public transport network.
