Pune, August 8, 2026: The wait for the Hinjawadi Metro is nearing its end. The first 12-km section of the Man–Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro corridor has completed its safety checks and received clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS).

With the mandatory safety approval now in place, the first section of the project is ready for passenger operations. The administration is also preparing for the formal inauguration, with August 15 being considered as the likely launch date.

The first section covers 12 stations between Maan and Balewadi. The work has been carried out through the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited, with the project aimed at improving daily connectivity for the large workforce travelling to Hinjawadi’s IT Park.

Before passenger services can begin, the route underwent technical and safety inspections. The completion of the CMRS inspection and subsequent approval has cleared a major hurdle for the start of operations.

Officials are now working on preparations for the inauguration ceremony. The opening is expected to be organised on a large scale, in line with previous major Metro launches in Pune.

The required files and formalities related to the Metro have reportedly been sent to the Chief Minister’s Office. Officials are working on the arrangements with the possibility of opening the first section on Independence Day.

For IT employees, the new Metro is expected to provide an alternative to the heavily congested roads around Hinjawadi. Thousands of people travel to the IT Park every day, and better public transport connectivity could help reduce their dependence on private vehicles.

The project is also expected to bring benefits such as reduced travel time, lower fuel consumption and less traffic pressure on roads connecting Hinjawadi with other parts of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

The administration is expected to announce the official inauguration schedule once the remaining formalities are completed. If the August 15 plan goes ahead, the Hinjawadi Metro will mark a major step in improving public transport connectivity to one of the region’s biggest IT hubs.
