Commuters travelling on the Pune-Bengaluru NH-48 Highway can expect smoother journeys in the coming years as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has received approval to build three new underpasses in western Pune.

The proposed box-structure underpasses will be constructed in the Punawale and Tathawade areas. The project is expected to cost between Rs 70 crore and Rs 80 crore and has received approval from Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.

The move is aimed at reducing traffic congestion on one of the busiest highway stretches in the Pimpri-Chinchwad region.

Punawale and Tathawade have witnessed rapid growth over the last few years due to their proximity to major IT hubs, industrial zones and expanding residential developments. As more people move into these areas, traffic on local roads and highway crossings has increased significantly.

According to market data, western Pune accounted for a large share of new housing supply and property sales during the first half of 2025, further adding pressure on existing road infrastructure.

The new underpasses are expected to ease traffic at several busy crossing points along the highway. Daily commuters travelling between Punawale, Tathawade, Wakad, Ravet and Kiwale are likely to benefit from faster and more convenient travel.

The project is also expected to improve connectivity to the Hinjewadi IT Corridor, providing relief to thousands of IT professionals who use the route every day.

Traffic congestion has become a major concern in areas such as Punawale, Tathawade, Wakad, Kiwale and Ravet due to rapid residential growth. Existing underpasses often experience heavy congestion because of limited capacity, resulting in delays during peak hours.

Officials believe the new infrastructure will improve movement across both sides of the highway and reduce bottlenecks at key junctions.

Among the areas expected to benefit the most are Punawale, Tathawade, Wakad, Kiwale, Ravet and Hinjewadi. These locations have seen significant residential and commercial development in recent years, leading to a sharp rise in traffic volumes.

The improved connectivity could also make travel easier towards Pimpri-Chinchwad, central Pune and other major employment hubs in the region.

The underpass project is part of a broader plan to upgrade the Pune-Bengaluru highway corridor. Authorities are also working on service roads, drainage improvements, additional crossings and other measures aimed at reducing congestion and supporting future growth.

With western Pune continuing to expand rapidly, these infrastructure upgrades are expected to play an important role in improving transportation and supporting the region’s long-term development.
