The ambitious ₹14,200 crore project aims to improve connectivity between Lohegaon Airport, Hinjewadi IT Park, Chakan MIDC, and several major highways while reducing traffic congestion across Pune.
The proposed 83.12-km Inner Ring Road will provide an alternative route for vehicles travelling across the city without passing through busy central areas. The project is expected to reduce travel time for commuters, improve freight movement, and ease pressure on existing roads.
During a high-level review meeting, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis instructed officials to speed up land acquisition and complete all remaining procedures within the set timeline. He also directed authorities to ensure timely compensation for landowners to avoid delays in the project.
The ring road will connect key transport corridors, including the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, Pune-Nashik Highway, Pune-Ahmednagar Road, Solapur Road, Pune-Satara Road, and Pune-Paud Road.
Once completed, the corridor will offer better connectivity between residential areas, industrial zones, IT hubs, and the airport. It is also expected to divert heavy and long-distance traffic away from Pune’s city centre.
The 65-metre-wide corridor will include major infrastructure such as 11 tunnels with a combined length of 12.62 km, 17 major bridges, two railway overbridges, and nine interchanges to ensure smoother traffic movement.
The government has also prioritised the Solu Interchange-Vadgaon Shinde section, which will connect the Pune-Mumbai Expressway with Pune-Ahmednagar Road.
This stretch will be developed in two phases. The first phase, from Solu Interchange to Nirgudi, is estimated to cost ₹884.89 crore, including GST. The second phase, from Nirgudi to Vadgaon Shinde, has an estimated cost of ₹310.89 crore, and its Detailed Project Report (DPR) has already been prepared.
Together, these priority sections cover 42.30 km of the overall project.
Officials believe the Inner Ring Road will significantly strengthen Pune’s transport network by improving connectivity between fast-growing suburbs, industrial areas, and commercial centres. Once operational, the project is expected to reduce congestion, shorten travel times, and support the city’s future transport and logistics needs.
