The area, known as one of the major IT hubs in the country, has been struggling with traffic jams, pothole-ridden roads and poor civic infrastructure for several years. Both local residents and thousands of IT professionals face difficulties every day.
Hinjewadi IT Park sees a large number of employees travelling to and from work every day. However, the increasing number of vehicles and poor road conditions have made peak-hour travel increasingly difficult.
In many cases, commuters spend hours covering just a few kilometres. Large potholes and damaged roads, particularly during the monsoon, have also increased concerns over road safety.
Against this backdrop, a joint meeting of villagers, IT professionals and local residents was held to discuss the September 6 protest. The participants discussed their demands as well as the strategy for the upcoming agitation.
The protest is also expected to see participation from representatives across political parties. NCP leader and local MLA Shankar Mandekar was present at the meeting and assured residents and IT professionals that he would raise their concerns with the government and push for concrete solutions.
The Hinjewadi IT Park contributes significantly to Maharashtra’s economy and provides employment to a large number of people. Residents, however, say the area’s infrastructure has not kept pace with its rapid development.
Villagers have also stressed that development should not be limited to the IT Park. Hinjewadi, Maan, Marunji and other nearby villages should also receive better roads, civic facilities and basic infrastructure.
Mandekar said he would also follow up on issues related to roads, traffic, infrastructure and administration in Hinjewadi, similar to the efforts being made over problems in the Chakan MIDC area.
With IT employees and villagers joining forces, the September 6 protest is expected to draw greater attention to the long-standing problems in the region.
Residents say they want permanent solutions rather than repeated assurances. The response from the administration and the state government to the protest will now be closely watched.
