Hinjewadi Traffic Nightmare: Survey Names 10 Worst Congestion Spots In IT Park

Traffic remains a major headache for people travelling to Hinjewadi IT Park, with thousands of employees facing long delays during their daily commute. A recent survey has now identified the 10 worst congestion hotspots in and around the busy IT hub.

The survey was carried out as part of the ‘Unclog Hinjewadi IT Park’ campaign, which has been highlighting the area’s infrastructure and traffic problems. Employees reported spending hours on the road, while several also raised concerns about unsafe pedestrian movement, encroachments and limited public transport.

Laxmi Chowk was ranked as the most problematic location by IT employees. Wipro Circle and Bhumkar Chowk followed it on the list.

The survey comes a year after the ‘Unclog Hinjewadi IT Park’ campaign was started to draw attention to the area’s worsening traffic and infrastructure issues.

Employees were asked about the stretches where they regularly encounter traffic and the problems they face while travelling to and from their workplaces.

One of the biggest concerns raised was the lack of safe facilities for pedestrians to cross busy roads. Respondents also highlighted missing footpaths, road encroachments, narrow roads, parking problems and poorly timed traffic signals.

Another issue flagged by employees was poor last-mile connectivity, making it difficult for those who depend on public transport to reach their offices.

The survey also looked at how employees travel to the IT Park. Private cars were the most commonly used option, followed by two-wheelers. Cabs and company buses accounted for a smaller share, while some employees said they cycle to work.

PMPML buses, however, were used by very few respondents. The low usage points to the limited role of public transport in meeting the daily commuting needs of Hinjewadi’s large workforce.

Sachin Londhe, coordinator of the ‘Unclog Hinjewadi IT Park’ campaign, said the situation had not improved enough despite a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister last year to discuss the area’s infrastructure problems.

Londhe said that infrastructure work remains incomplete and called for immediate government intervention to address the problems faced by commuters.

The survey has once again highlighted the need for better roads, safer pedestrian facilities, improved traffic management and stronger public transport connectivity in Hinjewadi, which is among Pune’s biggest IT and employment centres.
