Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro: The upcoming Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro corridor is set to get better road connectivity, with 21 roads planned to provide easier access to the metro stations. The move is aimed at improving last-mile connectivity for employees working in the Hinjewadi IT Park.

The planned roads will cover around 20 kilometres. The work includes widening and improving existing roads, along with developing some new internal roads.

The aim is to ensure that commuters do not have to depend only on the main road along the metro corridor. The planned network will make it easier for employees to travel from different IT Park offices to the nearby metro stations.

There are eight metro stations in the Hinjewadi area. Roads within a distance of around 500 metres to 1.5 kilometres from each station have been included in the plan.

The main road below the Hinjewadi metro corridor is around 10 kilometres long. Parts of this road fall under the jurisdiction of MIDC and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).

Around Megapolis Circle station, the plan includes roads in Phase 3 of the IT Park, the road towards the cricket ground, Bhoirwadi Road and other internal roads. Together, these works cover around four kilometres.

At Quadrant Circle station, around 3.6 kilometres of roads have been proposed. This includes two roads in Phase 3 along with other internal roads.

The state government has made a provision of ₹426 crore for the road development works. Authorities are planning to speed up the work before the metro service begins.

However, the real challenge will be what happens after passengers get off the metro.

The Hinjewadi Metro is expected to make the main part of the journey to the IT Park easier. But employees will still need to travel from the metro station to their respective offices. With the IT Park spread across a large area and companies located at different points, the metro alone may not solve the entire commuting problem.

Internal roads, pedestrian routes, buses, autorickshaws and other feeder services will therefore play an important role.

Residents believe that the metro will have a bigger impact on Hinjewadi’s traffic problems only if last-mile access is properly connected to the offices and other parts of the IT Park.
