The plans were discussed at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai. Urban Development Minister of State Madhuri Misal, Chief Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and senior officials from various departments were present. Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi presented the proposals.
Work on the projects is planned to begin from December. The administration has set a target of improving traffic movement and drainage-related problems in Chakan before the next monsoon.
For Chakan’s infrastructure development, MIDC, PMRDA, the Public Works Department, Zilla Parishad and other agencies will have to work together. The government has called for better coordination between departments and the use of available funds for roads, drainage, traffic management and public facilities.
Waterlogging has become a major problem in the Chakan industrial area during the monsoon. A survey found encroachments along around 78 km of natural drains. Officials said around 70-80% of the work to remove these encroachments has already been completed.
The administration aims to clear the natural drains and complete the drainage system by June 2027. Around 38 km of roadside stormwater drains are also planned to improve the flow of rainwater.
A study of Chakan’s 498-km road network has been carried out. In the first phase, around 75 km of roads will be improved. The work will also include pedestrian facilities and safer road-crossing arrangements.
The government is also planning around 500 additional buses for workers travelling to Chakan from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Officials believe better public transport could reduce the number of private vehicles and help ease congestion.
Six important junctions in the Chakan area are also planned for improvement. The proposed traffic management system will include AI-based signals, cameras, radar and vehicle number plate recognition, along with a central command and control centre.
Parking facilities for heavy vehicles have been planned at five locations in Chakan. A water supply project is targeted for completion in 2027, while work on a 100 MVA power substation is scheduled to begin in December.
The administration is also working on a centralised solid waste processing facility for the Chakan area.
For Hinjewadi, a separate Rs 426 crore plan has been prepared to tackle traffic congestion and infrastructure issues. Six acres of land has been made available to address power supply-related problems in the area.
An AI-based traffic management system is also planned for Chakan, Talegaon and Hinjewadi. Traffic will be monitored through a command and control centre in coordination with the traffic police.
The government is also planning to deploy 100 Maharashtra Security Force personnel in the Chakan area from October 1.
Together, the two proposals represent infrastructure projects worth Rs 1,826 crore, covering roads, drainage, public transport, traffic management, power supply and other civic requirements in the Chakan and Hinjewadi areas.
