The Maharashtra government is planning to set up a special body to study problems faced by IT employees in Pune and other tech hubs.

According to Shankar Jagtap, a dedicated IT Study Cell will be created to look into issues like job insecurity, layoffs, and labour rights in areas such as Hinjawadi.

The decision comes after a high-level meeting held at Mantralaya with Labour Minister Aakash Fundkar. Officials said concerns raised by employees, including sudden layoffs and lack of proper legal protection, were discussed in detail.

Jagtap said the issue has now reached the office of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. A separate meeting is expected soon to take policy decisions for IT professionals.

During the discussion, officials highlighted rising complaints from employees, especially freshers entering the industry. The proposed IT Study Cell will include experts who will study whether new laws or stronger rules are needed for the sector.

The government is also considering setting up an IT tribunal to handle employee complaints and workplace disputes quickly. This could help in faster resolution of issues related to layoffs and working conditions.

Other suggestions discussed in the meeting include better enforcement of labour laws, checking workplace facilities, and ensuring proper functioning of Internal Committees under safety laws. Officials also spoke about involving the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation to secure employee benefits.

Jagtap said that while the IT sector plays a key role in the state’s economy, employee concerns often go unheard. He added that the government is working on long-term solutions to protect workers and improve labour rights.

Officials indicated that a fast-track system for IT-related cases could be ready by June, depending on further decisions.
