According to officials, many workers involved in the project returned to their home state of West Bengal during the assembly elections, which slowed down construction work. At the same time, a shortage of materials due to the ongoing West Asia conflict has further affected progress.
The metro service was originally expected to begin in March last year but has missed several deadlines since then. Earlier, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had said operations would start in May this year, but that timeline is now unlikely.
As per the latest update, the first phase of the project is now expected to begin from June 15, 2026, covering 12 stations. The remaining stations are likely to be opened in phases, with full operations expected by October.
The corridor is around 23 km long and includes 23 stations. It is Pune’s third metro route and is designed to connect the busy IT hub of Hinjawadi with key central areas of the city.
The project is being developed under a public-private partnership by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited.
Officials said that metro services cannot begin without approval from the Metro Safety Commissioner, and the required proposal has not yet been submitted.
Meanwhile, authorities have increased monitoring to speed up work. During a recent inspection near Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk, a major water leakage issue was found near the Pashan ramp, which was also affecting construction.
The project timeline has been revised multiple times over the past year — from March 2025 to September 2025, then December 2025, March 2026, and May 2026. It is now expected that the first phase will finally begin in mid-June.
Despite repeated delays, officials say efforts are being made to complete the remaining work and start operations as soon as possible.
