Pune: In a major step towards solving the waste management problem at Hinjewadi IT Park, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) is close to completing a new solid waste management project. The facility will not only process waste generated in the IT park but will also produce Bio-CNG that can be used as fuel for vehicles.

Over the past few years, the Rajiv Gandhi IT Park in Hinjewadi has expanded rapidly. As the number of companies and employees increased, waste generation also rose significantly. Managing and disposing of this waste became a growing challenge for authorities.

To address the issue, MIDC decided to set up a solid waste management facility within the IT park itself. The project is being developed on a two-hectare site and involves an investment of around ₹11 crore.

The contract for the project was awarded to Abhay Bio CNG Company through a tender process conducted by MIDC. Construction work began in March 2024 and has now reached the final stage. Officials are aiming to make the facility operational by December.

The project is being developed under the Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) model. Under this arrangement, the company that built the facility will manage and operate it for the next 10 years.

Apart from operating the plant, the company will also handle waste collection across the IT park. It will collect segregated wet and dry waste from establishments and manage the cleaning of roads and open spaces within the area.

According to MIDC Executive Engineer Rajendra Totla, efforts are being made to complete the remaining work as quickly as possible so that the project can start operations without delay.

The facility will have a processing capacity of 10 tonnes of waste per day. Officials said the waste generated in the IT park will be treated at the plant and converted into useful resources.

One of the key features of the project is the production of Bio-CNG. The plant is expected to generate around 150 to 200 kilograms of Bio-CNG daily. This fuel will be supplied to vehicles through a dedicated CNG station planned within the project premises.

MIDC Superintending Engineer Nilesh Modhave said the project will help solve the waste disposal issue while also creating a sustainable source of fuel.

Kanchan Bhalerao, Chief Executive Officer of Abhay Bio CNG, said the Bio-CNG produced at the facility will be distributed directly to vehicles. The initiative is expected to support cleaner transportation and improve environmental sustainability in the IT park.

Once operational, the solid waste management project is expected to reduce waste-related challenges at Hinjewadi IT Park while promoting the use of eco-friendly fuel generated from everyday waste.
