Hinjewadi: The government’s decision to increase private sector work hours from 8 to 12 per day has sparked strong opposition from IT employees in Pune’s Hinjawadi.

The Forum for IT Employees (FITE) said the move would reduce job opportunities. According to the group, if current employees are made to work longer, companies will not feel the need to hire new staff. This, they fear, will shrink the number of jobs available in the IT industry.

The forum also raised concerns about the health impact. An extra 10 hours of work every week could affect both the mental and physical well-being of employees. “This is nothing but a form of exploitation in the name of work,” the group said in a statement.

At the same time, employees have been demanding that the notice period be cut from 90 days to 30 days, citing unfair practices such as forced resignations and large-scale layoffs. The forum questioned why the government has not acted on these demands but has instead chosen to increase work hours.

“For years, the government claimed it cannot interfere in the private sector. But now that it has stepped in to extend working hours, it should also bring reforms that protect employees’ rights,” said Pawanjit Mane, President of FITE.

He added that making employees work 12-hour shifts would stop companies from recruiting new manpower, creating a serious risk to job opportunities in the IT sector.

The forum has urged the government to rethink its decision and frame laws that protect employees instead of burdening them with longer hours.
