Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro: The long-awaited Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro corridor has received a major clearance, bringing it closer to the start of passenger services. The 23.30-km Metro route has received approval from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), with all 17 stations now cleared for operations.

PMRDA Commissioner Dr Abhijit Chaudhari shared the update at a press conference held at the PMRDA office in Akurdi on Tuesday.

According to Chaudhari, the Metro has received the required safety approval and the remaining work is expected to be completed within the next 15 days. After that, the corridor will be ready to begin passenger services.

However, the final decision on when passenger operations will officially start will be taken by the state government. Once the government gives its approval, services can begin.

The project was initially planned to start with 12 stations. However, officials later decided to open the entire 23-km corridor with all 17 stations rather than operate only part of the route.

Officials said running Metro services on only half the corridor may not have generated the expected passenger response. Direct connectivity with the existing Pune Metro network at Shivajinagar is also expected to make the route more useful for commuters.

The Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro project is being developed on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis through Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited.

The project has faced several delays. Its deadline was earlier extended to December 2025. It has now been extended further to December 2026. An additional three months, up to March 31, 2027, has also been provided for remaining minor works and repairs.

The company executing the project has received several notices over delays. Chaudhari said action would be taken after the project is completed and the reasons behind the delays are examined.

The Metro ticket fares have not yet been finalised. Officials said fares will be decided after considering passenger response, the number of services and other operational factors.

The fare structure is expected to be officially announced on the day of the Metro’s formal inauguration.
