Pimpri: A new chapter in women empowerment is set to begin with the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro project, where women will take complete charge of metro operations. Around 100 women loco pilots have been appointed and trained to operate the metro services on the route.

Among them is Vidya Bhurre, a young woman from Pendhari village in Nagpur district. Coming from a farming family, Vidya’s journey has become an inspiration for many aspiring women across Maharashtra.

Speaking about her achievement, Vidya said her parents are farmers and no one in her village has pursued higher education. She is the eldest among five siblings, which include four sisters and one brother. Determined to build a career in a different field, she moved to Pune for her education.

While studying, she learned about recruitment opportunities in the metro project and applied for the position. After being selected, she completed training between September and March, followed by hands-on training to operate metro trains.

Vidya said her parents are extremely proud that she has become a part of such an important project. Her story reflects how determination and education can open doors to new opportunities.

The Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro is a 23-kilometre corridor currently nearing completion. The project is being developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by the Tata Group through Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL), a special purpose vehicle created for the project.

The responsibility for operating and managing the metro has been given to the French company Keolis. PMRDA and PITCMRL have signed a 10-year agreement with the company for metro operations.

As part of its focus on women empowerment, Keolis has decided to hand over the responsibility of running the metro entirely to women. Along with recruitment and training, the company has also introduced special safety measures for female employees. These arrangements cover workplace security as well as travel-related safety.

Sakshi Bhosale, one of the trained loco pilots, said she is excited about driving the metro and is looking forward to serving passengers once operations begin. She added that all the women drivers are eager to welcome commuters on the new route.

Another loco pilot, Gargi Thakur, said the initiative is one of the most significant steps towards empowering women in public transport. According to her, the project will give Pune Metro a unique identity across the country and showcase the growing role of women in modern transport systems.

With women set to operate the entire metro service, the project is being seen as a major milestone in creating new career opportunities and encouraging greater participation of women in technical and transport sectors.
