Hinjawadi: Heavy rainfall in Pune on Monday once again exposed the poor condition of Hinjewadi IT Park, one of the city’s biggest technology hubs. Waterlogging across several roads disrupted traffic and made it difficult for thousands of IT employees to reach their offices.

Many commuters found themselves stuck for hours as roads were flooded. Some had no choice but to walk through knee-deep water to continue their journey. The situation also made it difficult for many people to return home after work.

The flooding has raised fresh questions over the lack of pre-monsoon preparations. Incomplete roadwork, poor drainage cleaning, and blocked stormwater channels led to water collecting at several locations across Hinjewadi.

Several major routes leading to the IT park were badly affected. The Tathawade Underpass was completely closed after it was flooded, while traffic at the Punawale underpass moved at a very slow pace.

The road near Indira College on the Pune-Bengaluru Highway was also shut after heavy waterlogging. The Tathawade, Surya, and Sayaji underpasses were submerged, creating major traffic problems. Areas such as Maangaon, T-Junction, and Pandavnagar also reported severe waterlogging, causing hardship for residents and motorists.

As the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert, many employees decided to work from home or take leave. However, power outages in several areas created fresh problems for those working remotely.

Residents have questioned who should be held responsible for the repeated flooding in Hinjewadi. Earlier, on June 10, PMRDA Commissioner Abhijit Chaudhari had said that if flooding continued despite preventive measures, responsibility would not lie with PMRDA alone, but also with MIDC and the local gram panchayats.

With the problem returning yet again this monsoon, residents are demanding immediate action. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Cooperative Housing Society Federation has urged the Chief Minister to personally intervene and resolve the issue.

Social activist Sachin Londhe said a new campaign called “Unclog Hinjewadi IT Park Petition 2.0” will soon be launched to push for long-term solutions. He pointed out that the then Chief Minister had met IT employees over the issue last year, and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had also followed up on the matter. However, with the same problems surfacing again, residents believe stronger action is now needed.
