Pune: The delay in the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro project has drawn strong reaction from state minister Chandrakant Patil. The second phase of this important metro route has been pending for a long time, even after the deadline was extended by authorities.

The project, which is being handled by the Tata Group, was expected to be completed earlier. However, despite the deadline passing, the metro service has still not started. This has raised concerns, and Patil has openly expressed his dissatisfaction.

Speaking at a public awareness event organised by MahaMetro, Patil said it was surprising that the project is still incomplete. He added that the work is now in its final stage and is expected to be completed within the next one to two months.

The event was held to inform citizens about new metro routes recently approved in Pune. These include corridors from Khadakwasla to Hadapsar via Kharadi, and from Nal Stop to Manik Baug-Warje. Several officials and local representatives were present at the programme.

Patil also spoke about the growing number of vehicles in Pune. He said roads cannot be widened beyond a certain limit, and the focus must now shift to improving public transport. Strengthening the metro network is a key part of this plan.

MahaMetro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar said Pune is expanding rapidly, and people must also change their mindset when it comes to transport. He urged citizens to be ready to walk around 400 to 500 metres to reach metro stations.

He also explained that it is not possible to provide parking at every metro station. However, efforts are being made to improve connectivity through shared autos and buses near stations.

Hardikar added that work on new metro routes like SNDT to Manik Baug and Khadakwasla-Hadapsar-Kharadi will begin after the monsoon. He also said that double-decker flyovers will be built on routes like Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi. The aim is to complete these projects within four years.

He clarified that the metro on Sinhagad Road will run along the road itself and not over the canal, as that is not feasible.

During the event, residents from Karvenagar, Warje and Sinhagad Road raised several concerns. They asked questions about project timelines, bridge plans, and high-tension wires. Some residents also warned that pending DP roads should be completed first before starting new metro or bridge work.
