The incident took place in the early hours of April 14, 2010, at Aparajita Society in Shindenagar, Hinjawadi.
According to the case, Subhojit was reportedly under stress after suffering losses in his business and had attempted to take his own life. His sister Priyadarshini opposed the attempt. Angered by this, he allegedly strangled her to death.
After killing his sister, Subhojit also allegedly cut a vein in his left hand in an attempt to end his own life.
Police Sub-Inspector A.S. Vanjari filed the complaint on behalf of the government. The investigation was carried out by then Police Sub-Inspector R.T. Pawar.
Investigators collected evidence from the crime scene, recorded statements of witnesses and gathered other evidence before filing the chargesheet in court.
The case was later selected as a ‘star case’ under the direction of senior police officials. Hinjawadi police continued to follow up on the court proceedings, including the presence of witnesses, forensic reports, seized material and other aspects of the case.
Government prosecutor Lina Pathak represented the prosecution before the court.
After considering the evidence and witness statements, the court convicted Subhojit Basu under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000. If he fails to pay the fine, he will have to undergo an additional one month in prison.
The verdict brings the 2010 Hinjawadi murder case to a conclusion after 16 years of legal proceedings.
