The sudden downpour created difficulties for commuters, particularly two-wheeler riders. In several areas, rainwater mixed with sewage and garbage, leading to foul-smelling water on the roads.
Knee-deep water was reported near Bodkewadi Phata on the Hinjewadi-Maan Road. Two-wheeler riders and pedestrians had to carefully make their way through the flooded stretch.
A stream near the Tathawade-Punawale border on the Aundh-Ravet BRTS route also overflowed after the heavy rain. A large volume of water flowed onto the road, making the stretch look like a river for some time.
The rainfall once again exposed problems with the drainage system in the area. Several stormwater drains were reportedly clogged, causing dirty and foul-smelling water to spill onto roads.
The Wakad, Tathawade, Punawale and Hinjewadi belt has seen rapid growth in residential complexes, commercial establishments and IT companies. However, the drainage infrastructure in several parts of the area remains inadequate to handle heavy rainfall.
Water also accumulated on service roads near the Tathawade-Punawale underpass. By evening, traffic congestion was reported on some IT Park roads as well as nearby highways.
The Shiv Colony area faced another problem when a large amount of leftover food from a hotel reportedly spilled onto the road. The waste added to the foul smell in the area.
Black, foul-smelling drain water was also seen flowing for nearly one kilometre from Tathawade Chowk. Students and workers had to walk through the dirty water to reach their destinations.
The waterlogging and overflowing drains have once again raised concerns about monsoon drainage problems in the rapidly developing Hinjewadi-Wakad-Tathawade-Punawale corridor.
