Hinjawadi IT Park Traffic Crisis Deepens As Potholes Take Over Key Roads

Hinjawadi’s image as one of Maharashtra’s biggest IT hubs is being hit by a growing infrastructure problem. Several major roads in the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park have deteriorated badly during the monsoon, with potholes and waterlogging making daily travel difficult for thousands of commuters.

Heavy rain has exposed the poor condition of roads across areas controlled by the Public Works Department, MIDC and PMRDA. In the absence of an effective drainage system, rainwater collects on the roads, damaging the surface and frequently bringing traffic to a standstill.

For IT employees travelling through Hinjawadi every day, the problem is not new. Encroachments, narrow roads, overflowing rainwater and damaged stretches have repeatedly contributed to long traffic jams in the area.

The situation has become even more concerning because several companies have reportedly moved out of Hinjawadi due to persistent traffic and infrastructure issues. As many as 37 companies have left the IT hub, raising questions about whether enough is being done to address the problems.

Last year, then Pune Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar had conducted inspections and held meetings with senior officials after concerns over Hinjawadi’s infrastructure gained attention. Officials were reportedly instructed to take up urgent improvement work and conduct regular inspections and meetings.

Those measures had raised hopes among local residents and IT employees that the long-standing problems would finally be addressed. Some work was also initiated at the time.

However, commuters now say the situation has once again started deteriorating, particularly during the monsoon. With heavy traffic already putting pressure on the narrow roads, potholes have added another major obstacle.

Roads near Laxmi Chowk, the Pandavnagar stretch towards Maan village and several MIDC roads have developed large potholes. The service road along the highway has also been affected, resulting in daily traffic congestion.

The continued problems have also led to criticism of the agencies responsible for maintaining different parts of the area. Residents and IT employees have questioned whether MIDC, PMRDA and the Public Works Department are passing responsibility from one agency to another instead of finding a permanent solution.

The lack of drainage, damaged roads and increasing traffic are making commuting increasingly difficult in one of Pune’s most important employment centres. With thousands of employees travelling to Hinjawadi every day, commuters are now seeking concrete action rather than repeated inspections and meetings.
