The debate around work from home has once again picked up in Pune’s IT sector after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens and companies to focus on cost-cutting and fuel savings.

The Prime Minister suggested that companies could allow employees to work from home to reduce daily travel, save fuel and cut commuting time. However, the suggestion has created fresh discussions within the IT industry.

Pune is one of India’s biggest IT hubs, with lakhs of employees working in companies across areas like Hinjewadi and surrounding business zones.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, most IT firms had shifted employees to work-from-home mode. But after the pandemic, companies slowly started calling employees back to offices.

Initially, many employees were unhappy with the decision. Some companies even warned staff of strict action if they failed to return to office regularly.

At present, most IT firms are following a hybrid work model, where employees are required to attend office on selected days each week.

Many companies believe that full-time work from home affects productivity and team coordination. Because of this, firms have avoided returning completely to remote work even after the pandemic.

At the same time, employee unions in the IT sector have welcomed the Prime Minister’s suggestion. Organisations such as the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) and Forum for IT Employees have demanded stronger work-from-home policies.

However, IT companies have not officially announced any major changes yet. Industry experts believe companies do not want to repeat the difficulties they faced earlier while bringing employees back to offices after Covid restrictions ended.

The central government has also clarified that companies will not be forced to implement work from home.

Supporters of remote work argue that allowing employees to stay home can help save fuel, reduce travel stress and improve work-life balance.

But some experts point out that office travel is only one part of daily fuel usage, and people may still travel for other personal reasons after work hours.

For Pune’s IT employees, especially those working in Hinjewadi IT Park, traffic congestion remains a major issue. Many workers spend over an hour stuck in traffic every day.

The delay in the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro project has further added to commuter frustration. Because of this, several employees feel that work from home could at least offer temporary relief from long travel hours and heavy traffic.

Currently, major IT companies in Pune follow different office attendance policies. TCS employees are expected to attend office five days a week, while firms like Infosys, Wipro, IBM, Cognizant and Capgemini require around three days of office presence. KPIT follows a two-day model, while Accenture currently requires employees to attend office one day a week.
