Pune: People working in the Hinjawadi IT Park are facing a serious problem. A strong foul smell has spread across parts of Phase 2, making it difficult to even walk on the main road.
The issue has been reported mainly near key spots like Dohle Chowk and nearby areas. Many employees and residents say they are forced to cover their noses while passing through these stretches.
Several companies and locals have already complained to MIDC about the situation. The smell is coming from drainage leakage and overflowing sewage in some parts of the road.
Last year, during the monsoon, roads in Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park were flooded, almost turning into waterlogged zones. Now, a new problem has come up, and the area is being compared to a “stinking park” by locals.
Officials found that untreated sewage from nearby residential projects is being directly released into stormwater drains. These projects fall under PMRDA limits, and their sewage treatment plants are reportedly not working.
Because of this, the main drainage lines, including a large 900 mm pipeline, are getting blocked. In some places, sewage is being released directly into rainwater drains, which is making the situation worse.
The problem has been noticed at multiple locations on the main road. These include areas near Grand High Street Mall, close to Metro Station No. 2, and near a McDonald’s outlet. At all these spots, the smell has become unbearable.
MIDC officials have written to PMRDA, asking them to take action against the residential projects and companies responsible for releasing untreated sewage. They have also requested strict steps to stop this practice.
At the same time, MIDC is working on clearing blocked drains to prevent waterlogging in the coming monsoon. However, the ongoing sewage issue is slowing down this work.
Rajendra Totla, an executive engineer with MIDC, said that after inspection, it was confirmed that sewage was being discharged directly into storm drains. He added that PMRDA has been informed and action is expected soon.
There are now concerns that if the issue is not fixed quickly, Hinjawadi may again face heavy waterlogging during the monsoon, just like last year.
This situation once again highlights the need for better monitoring and strict action. With Hinjawadi being a major IT hub, basic issues like drainage and hygiene cannot be ignored.
