The new Pune Metro Pink Line has brought relief to thousands of IT employees working in Hinjewadi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much-awaited metro service, which began operations on November 4.

With heavy traffic being a daily problem on roads connecting Hinjewadi and central Pune, commuters now have another option for their daily travel. However, many passengers are comparing the fares of the metro, PMPML buses and cabs to find out which option is more affordable.

The Pune Metro Pink Line connects Maan with Civil Court over a distance of around 23.2 km. The route passes through important areas such as Hinjewadi, Wakad, Balewadi, Aundh and the University area. It offers a new public transport option for office employees and other commuters travelling between these locations.

The metro fare depends on the distance travelled. Passengers travelling up to 2 km will pay Rs 12, while journeys between 2 and 4 km will cost Rs 25. The fare for 4 to 8 km is Rs 37, and passengers travelling 8 to 12 km will pay Rs 43.

For distances between 12 and 18 km, the ticket costs Rs 49. Journeys covering more than 18 km have a maximum fare of Rs 62. This means passengers travelling from Maan to Civil Court will have to pay Rs 62 for the complete journey.

PMPML buses can be a cheaper option for shorter journeys. The transport body introduced an 11-stage distance-based fare system in June 2025. The minimum fare is Rs 10 for the first 5 km, with charges increasing according to the distance travelled.

PMPML also offers a daily pass for Rs 70 and a monthly pass for Rs 1,500. These passes can be useful for people who regularly travel by bus and want to manage their monthly transport expenses.

Cab fares, on the other hand, are not fixed. The cost depends on the distance, travel time, traffic conditions, vehicle category and demand. Prices can increase during peak office hours and rainy weather. As a result, cabs are generally a more expensive option compared to the metro and public buses.

For regular commuters looking to save money, a PMPML pass may be a practical choice. The metro can be more convenient for travelling quickly along its route, especially during peak traffic hours. Cabs are useful for passengers who want to travel directly from their homes to their destinations without changing vehicles.

The Pink Line also offers an important advantage over road transport. Metro services are not affected by traffic congestion, making travel times more predictable for office employees heading to Hinjewadi.

However, the total travel cost will depend on how far a passenger lives from the nearest metro station. Those who need an auto-rickshaw or bus to reach the station will have to include that additional fare in their travel expenses.

Ultimately, the cheapest option depends on the distance, daily travel needs and availability of public transport. While PMPML buses may cost less for shorter journeys, the Pune Metro offers a more predictable journey during busy hours. Cabs provide greater convenience but usually come at a higher cost.
