The district administration has asked the civic body to assess the waste management and infrastructure needs of the seven villages. However, local corporators and residents in Moshi have already opposed any proposal to bring waste from these areas to the Moshi waste depot.
The issue comes nearly two months after a major accident at the Moshi waste depot. A mountain of accumulated waste reportedly collapsed onto an administrative building of the Waste-to-Energy project, killing nine workers and injuring 12 others.
Following the incident, waste management in Pimpri-Chinchwad has become a major challenge. Garbage has accumulated at several locations across the city.
The Moshi depot occupies around 81 acres and has been receiving waste from across the city for nearly 40 years. The site’s capacity has already been exhausted, but waste continues to be dumped there, resulting in large piles of garbage.
With limited space available at the depot, waste collection from households has also been affected. The civic health department has said garbage vehicles are sometimes delayed because space has to be cleared at the depot before fresh waste can be dumped.
Meanwhile, discussions have started over the possible inclusion of Hinjewadi, Maan, Marunji, Nere, Jambe, Sangawade and Gahunje in the PCMC limits. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently indicated that the process could move forward.
District Collector Jitendra Dudi had suggested that the civic administration hold a meeting with the sarpanchs and administrators of the seven villages to discuss their waste management requirements.
A meeting was scheduled at the municipal corporation office on Wednesday. However, it was postponed. Officials said the meeting is likely to be held next week.
The proposed expansion has already raised concerns among people living around the Moshi depot. Residents say the area is already carrying a heavy waste-management burden and should not be made responsible for additional waste from the seven villages.
Corporator Nikhil Borhade has demanded that an alternative location outside Moshi be identified if the seven villages are brought under the PCMC. He has also called for an environmentally safe and scientific waste-management system.
Borhade warned that residents could launch a strong protest if their concerns are not seriously addressed by the administration.
