Unsafe Nights in Hinjewadi? Women Staff Flag Security Gaps in IT Hub

Serious concerns are being raised over the safety of women employees working in Hinjewadi IT Park, one of Pune’s biggest technology hubs. Many women officers and staff members, especially those working late-night and early-morning shifts, say they are living in fear due to poor security arrangements.

Several women employees reportedly work until 2 am or even 3 am, but many feel there is not enough protection inside and around office campuses. Social activist Sachin Kalbhor has urged the district administration and police to take immediate steps to improve safety and create a secure working environment for women.

Complaints suggest that security measures in several company areas are weak. In some places, CCTV cameras are said to be non-functional, while security guards are too few in number. Poor lighting in and around office zones has also added to growing safety concerns among employees.

Women working night shifts have also expressed fear of harassment and crime. There are allegations that drunk men and local troublemakers are seen near some company areas, creating an unsafe atmosphere for women leaving work late at night. The increasing presence of intoxicated individuals has become a major worry.

The situation is said to be getting worse because of roadside encroachments and illegal activities near the IT park. Street stalls and handcart vendors operating late into the night have led to crowding in some areas. Complaints have also been raised about open drinking, public nuisance, and even suspected drug abuse in certain spots around the IT hub.

There is now a strong demand for increased police patrol in sensitive areas, especially during late-night hours. Employees and local voices are asking authorities to closely monitor suspicious activity and act quickly on complaints related to harassment, crime, and illegal substances.

Companies have also been urged to strengthen internal systems for women’s safety. Suggestions include complaint boxes, more active internal complaint committees, better security staffing, and special protection arrangements for women on night duty.

Another major demand is the cancellation of night shifts for women employees and shifting them to daytime work wherever possible. Supporters of this move believe it would reduce risk and improve employee safety.

Traffic congestion in Hinjewadi is also adding to daily difficulties, making travel stressful for women workers during peak hours and late evenings.

Under existing laws, including workplace sexual harassment rules and Maharashtra’s establishment laws, companies are required to provide safe pick-up and drop services, GPS-enabled vehicles, security guards, and working CCTV systems for women employees.

Despite these rules, concerns remain. Women employees and citizens now expect quick and strict action before the safety issue becomes more serious.
