Residents in Hinjawadi have taken matters into their own hands to clean the Mula River, which has been facing heavy pollution for a long time.
After waiting for nearly two years and repeatedly approaching authorities without any strong action, locals decided to act on their own. They raised around ₹2 lakh through crowdfunding and started a river cleaning drive in the area.
One of the main problems is the excessive growth of water hyacinth in the river. This has blocked the natural flow of water. As the plants decay, they create a foul smell and increase mosquito breeding, raising serious health concerns for people living nearby.
Some housing societies in the area also depend on this water source. This has led to worries about drinking water quality and overall safety.
To tackle the issue, residents have started removing water plants and sludge from the river using machines like JCBs. Many people are also joining the effort through voluntary work, showing strong community support.
Earlier, locals had tried to draw attention to the problem through protests, awareness drives and formal complaints. However, they said no long-term solution was implemented, which led to frustration among residents.
Citizens have also raised concerns about floating barriers placed in the river by authorities. According to them, these barriers are causing water hyacinth to collect in one place, making the situation worse. They are now demanding that these barriers be removed as a priority.
Another issue highlighted by locals is dumping of construction debris into the river. Residents warned that if builders do not clear the waste, they may approach the National Green Tribunal.
The cleanup effort has now gained attention in the area, with more people stepping forward to support the cause. Locals say this initiative shows what community action can achieve when official response is delayed.
