The initiative by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL) aims to make pedestrian movement safer and reduce traffic congestion in the busy IT hub.
Nearly 90,000 employees work across the five campuses identified for the project. Direct pedestrian connections could help thousands of employees avoid crossing busy roads during peak office hours.
Under the proposal, MIDC will provide the land needed for the bridge pillars, while the respective companies will pay for the construction.
MIDC executive engineer RG Totla said one technology company and another business park operated by a developer have already agreed to construct the footbridges, and the required approvals have been issued.
The two approved bridges will connect offices in Hinjewadi Phase 2 with the MIDC Circle, Hinjewadi Circle 1 and Hinjewadi Circle 2 Metro stations. These campuses have a combined workforce of around 55,000 employees.
Officials said the corporate foot overbridges are expected to reduce the number of pedestrians using roads, improve traffic movement and reduce the risk of accidents.
PITCMRL officials said the project is being developed as a joint effort between the authorities and the companies.
MIDC has also approached three other companies to develop similar pedestrian bridges connecting their campuses to Metro stations near Maan, Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk, Hinjewadi and Hinjewadi Circle 1.
These campuses have a combined workforce of around 32,000 people. Discussions with the companies are currently underway, and MIDC officials expect a positive response.
Residents and regular commuters have welcomed the proposal, especially with road conditions in the area remaining a concern.
Hinjewadi resident Sameer Kulkarni said roads under the Metro corridor have become narrower and remain in poor condition. He said direct footbridges between offices and Metro stations could make daily travel safer and easier for employees.
Aditi Deshpande, who travels from Warje to Hinjewadi several times a week, said direct access to Metro stations could provide some relief from the area’s traffic problems.
With road projects progressing slowly and traffic bottlenecks continuing, she said a direct pedestrian connection could make the last-mile journey much simpler for thousands of employees.
