According to officials, the Tata Group and the state government have given in-principle approval for the allocation of seven TMC of water from Mulshi Dam. The Water Resources Department has asked PMRDA, Pune Municipal Corporation and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to finalise their respective water requirements and submit detailed proposals.
Officials said this could open the way for a portion of Pune city’s additional water allocation to be used for Hinjawadi, helping address the area’s growing demand.
PMRDA has submitted a proposal to the state government seeking 1.2 TMC water quota from the dam for Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park. If approved, the project is expected to provide a permanent solution to water supply concerns faced by industries and businesses operating in the region.
To support this plan, the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP) has prepared a water supply scheme worth around ₹565 crore. An initial funding allocation of ₹100 crore has already been made for the project.
The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has also provided the required land for the proposed infrastructure.
However, work on the project had been delayed because the necessary water quota had not yet been approved. To resolve the issue, a recent meeting was held under the chairmanship of District Collector Jitendra Dudi. The meeting was attended by PMRDA Commissioner Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari and officials from Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran.
During the discussions, it was decided that PMRDA would take the lead in securing approval for the required water allocation from the state government.
Officials said the water supply scheme is being implemented by Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran, which will also arrange the funding. PMRDA’s role will be to assist in obtaining the required approvals and ensuring that the project moves ahead without further delays.
If the proposal receives final approval, the water supply project is expected to strengthen infrastructure in Hinjawadi and support the continued growth of one of Maharashtra’s largest technology and business hubs.
