Hinjewadi: In a major anti-drug operation, Hinjewadi Police seized around 10 kilograms of opium husk and opium pods and arrested a man from Rajasthan who was allegedly attempting to sell the narcotic substance in Pune’s IT hub.

The accused has been identified as Pushpendra Singh Kirparam, a resident of Rajasthan. The action has once again raised concerns over the growing presence of drug networks in Hinjewadi, a locality known for its large concentration of IT companies and young professionals.

According to police, the operation was carried out based on specific intelligence inputs. Officers received information that the suspect would arrive in the area to sell opium products. Acting on the tip-off, the police laid a trap, kept the suspect under surveillance and detained him at the right moment.

During the search, officials recovered a large quantity of opium husk powder and opium pods from the accused. Police said the total weight of the seized material was nearly 10 kilograms.

During the preliminary investigation, police found that the opium husk was allegedly consumed by mixing it with cigarettes or adding it to tea and coffee. Officials believe this method can produce a quicker intoxicating effect and may be gaining popularity among young users.

Police also suspect that such narcotic substances could be reaching youngsters working in the IT sector, making the case a matter of serious concern.

Investigators are now examining the accused’s criminal background to determine whether he was involved in similar offences in the past. They are also looking into possible links with drug trafficking networks operating in other states.

Police said efforts are underway to find out whether the accused was working alone or was part of a larger drug racket. A detailed investigation is currently in progress to uncover the entire supply chain behind the operation.

The seizure is being viewed as significant because it took place in Hinjewadi, one of Pune’s biggest technology and employment hubs. While the police have managed to intercept a large quantity of narcotics before it reached the market, officials say identifying the people involved in the broader drug network will be the next major challenge.

The operation has also sent a strong message that law enforcement agencies are continuing their efforts to curb illegal drug activities in the area.
