Hinjewadi Rain Creates Chaos: Roads Flooded, Vehicles Swept Away

Sudden Rainfall Disrupts Life in Hinjewadi IT Park

Hinjewadi, Pune, 7 June 2025 – A short yet intense spell of rain early Saturday morning brought the bustling Hinjewadi IT Park to a standstill. In just a few minutes, several roads were submerged under water, turning parts of the area into what looked like a water park. Many two-wheelers were seen floating away in strong currents, and traffic was badly affected.

Flooding Exposes Drainage Problems

The sudden Hinjewadi rain once again exposed the lack of proper drainage and poor pre-monsoon planning by authorities. The worst-hit areas included Telco Road, Landewadi, and parts of Phase 2. Videos from residents showed how water quickly filled roads, trapping vehicles and causing long jams.

Even though the rain lasted less than an hour, it was enough to flood major routes and create serious trouble for those commuting to work or living in the area.

Citizens Blame Authorities

Many residents and workers expressed anger over how the same flooding issue returns every year. They pointed out that civic authorities talk a lot but do little. Meetings are held, statements are made, but no real action is seen on the ground.

People living in nearby areas like Bhosari MIDC and Landewadi under the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation also faced waterlogging. Streets filled with water, making it hard to move around even on foot.

MP Supriya Sule Raises Concern

MP Supriya Sule shared videos of waterlogging in Hinjewadi Phase 2, especially near Ryan International School. She questioned whether the area even has a working drainage system. She urged the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to act quickly.

According to her, work like drain cleaning must be done before the rains begin. She said that if these tasks continue to be delayed, this flooding problem will keep coming back every monsoon.

IT Employees Speak Out

The Forum of IT Employees (FITE), which represents the IT workforce in Pune, said the situation in Hinjewadi after rain is shameful. They highlighted how poor roads and bad sewage systems are making life difficult.

Pavanjit Mane, FITE’s president, said even a 45-minute rain turned roads into rivers. “We keep asking the authorities to fix the roads and drains, but they don’t take it seriously,” he added.

FITE has also been pushing for a work-from-home option during heavy rains, especially in the monsoon season, so that employees don’t have to face such dangerous travel conditions.

Different Bodies, No Accountability

One big issue is the lack of coordination. The Hinjewadi area is managed by several agencies – PMC, PCMC, PMRDA, MIDC, and local gram panchayats. Because of this, no one takes full responsibility. Everyone blames someone else.

This lack of unity leads to delays and inaction. Residents are left dealing with the mess while different departments just pass the buck.

Weekend Saved Bigger Trouble

Luckily, the rain happened on a Saturday – a holiday for most IT companies. So, the traffic jam lasted around five hours. But if the same rain had hit on a weekday, the chaos could have lasted 10-12 hours. Thousands of employees would have been stuck.

Earlier rains just two weeks ago had also flooded Hinjewadi, but no proper repairs were made. Only temporary patchwork was done using loose soil and stones. Authorities had enough time to act but chose to ignore it.

If this continues, upcoming monsoon showers will cause even more damage. That is a real concern for those living and working in the area.

Flooded Roads, Vehicles Stuck

Several key areas such as Pandav Nagar, Mann Phase 3, Mann Chowk, Punawale, Tathawade, and Bhumkar Chowk were heavily waterlogged. Vehicles formed long queues. Some buses were even seen half-submerged in viral videos, struggling to move through water that looked like waves.

Only large vehicles could pass. Smaller cars and bikes either broke down or got stuck. In some cases, two-wheelers were seen being washed away by the force of water.

Metro Construction Worsening the Issue

Ongoing metro work in Hinjewadi has made the situation worse. Cement barricades under the metro bridges are blocking the natural flow of water. Rainwater coming down from nearby hills and elevated areas gets trapped, and with no clear drainage, it stays on the roads.

Locals say these problems are not new. Every year, the story repeats. But authorities like MIDC and Metro officials are slow to respond. No permanent solution has been implemented yet.

Local Reactions to Hinjewadi Rain

Many social media users and local citizens called the flooded IT Park a “wave pool” or “water park.” The sarcasm reflects deep frustration.

FITE posted online saying, “It’s a shame that even after so many complaints, the MIDC and PMRDA have not fixed this. How many times will we raise this issue?”

Supriya Sule also posted again, asking why the authorities are not clearing the drains on time. She stressed that proper maintenance before the rains is essential.

Rainfall Data and Alerts – Hinjewadi Rain

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune received over 150 mm of rain on Saturday. A ‘yellow’ alert has been issued for more heavy rainfall in the coming days. This means the chances of further flooding remain high, especially if nothing is done.
