Pune’s OTP-based water tanker management system, announced to prevent fake delivery records and water misuse, has still not been implemented across the city, even six months after its announcement. Apart from Sus and Mahalunge, the system remains non-operational in other areas, prompting the Sajag Nagrik Manch to question the delay.

The Pune Municipal Corporation had announced plans to introduce the system across areas including Pashan, Baner, Mahalunge and Balewadi, with the aim of making water tanker deliveries more transparent and accountable.

Under the system, citizens or housing societies receive a one-time password (OTP) through SMS when a tanker arrives at the designated delivery location. The OTP must be entered into the system before the water is unloaded. A tanker trip is not considered complete until the OTP is recorded, helping verify that the delivery has taken place.

The system aims to prevent fake trips, delays in water delivery and the misuse of water. However, its implementation across Pune remains pending.

Vivek Velankar of the Sajag Nagrik Manch has warned that demand for water tankers could increase further due to water cuts in the coming period. He said effective monitoring is necessary to prevent residents from being exploited and to ensure proper water distribution.

In a representation submitted to the municipal commissioner, Velankar has demanded that the OTP-based system be implemented urgently at all tanker points across Pune.
