A major power outage hit Hinjawadi and nearby areas on March 22 due to a fire in the Ambegaon hills. The fire spread to trees and bushes under the Pirangut-Kandalgaon 220 KV high-voltage transmission line, causing a system trip. Over 90,000 domestic, commercial, and industrial consumers, including 200 IT companies in Hinjawadi, were affected.

According to Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL), the fire reached the base of the high-voltage power infrastructure. This triggered a tripping event that shut down 31 substations in the Pimpri and Mulshi divisions. The sudden outage resulted in a power deficit of 182 MW, disrupting supply across multiple areas.

The power outage impacted Hinjawadi, Wakad, Pirangut, Bhukum, Bhugav, Paud, Mutha Khore, Kolvan Khore, and nearby locations. Residents and businesses experienced power failures for about 43 minutes before services were restored.

Senior MSETCL engineers quickly responded to the situation. They arrived at the site and conducted emergency repairs, restoring power within 43 minutes and minimizing the impact on businesses and households.

Repeated Power Cuts Due to Fire Incidents

Similar incidents have occurred before. Earlier in March, an unidentified person set fire to dry grass near the 400 kV extra-high-voltage substation in Talegaon. This caused a system trip in the Talegaon-Lonikand 400 kV tower line, affecting nearly 2.49 lakh consumers in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Chakan MIDC, and Bhosari for over an hour.

Need for Stronger Preventive Measures

MSETCL officials have raised concerns over the increasing frequency of such incidents, especially during dry seasons. A senior official stated that these incidents highlight the vulnerability of high-voltage power lines to fire hazards. Preventive measures such as firebreaks and regular monitoring of vegetation near power lines have been instructed to reduce the risk.

Authorities and residents need to work together to prevent such outages. Regular clearing of vegetation around power lines, implementing fire prevention measures, and increasing public awareness about fire risks near power infrastructure are essential to avoid future disruptions.
