Double-Decker Buses Coming to Pune: Trials Begin in Hinjewadi, Magarpatta and Kharadi

Hinjewadi: Pune is preparing to welcome an electric double-decker bus from Chennai, with trial runs scheduled this week. The bus will be tested for a week in areas like Magarpatta, Hinjawadi, and Kharadi. If the trials prove successful, PMPML plans to start regular double-decker services in Pune, especially on routes in the IT corridor.

The initiative comes after the mobility company Switch gave its approval to supply buses for Pune. Officials from PMPML and Switch Mobility recently held discussions to finalize operations. The company already supplies similar buses to Mumbai’s BEST service, which served as an inspiration for Pune’s plan.

The new bus is fully electric and air-conditioned. It includes features like digital ticketing and a modern suspension system designed for smoother rides. The design resembles the famous London double-deckers. Each bus can carry about 70 seated passengers and another 40 standing. Standing 14 feet 4 inches tall, the bus will not affect metro structures along city routes.

One key factor behind this move is cost. The older SLF double-decker buses once used in Pune were expensive to maintain. PMPML officials say the new electric buses will have much lower upkeep costs while also offering better comfort for passengers.

The estimated cost of each bus is around ₹2 crore. PMPML officials will monitor the trial runs closely to check the vehicle’s performance and service quality. Based on the results, the city will decide on introducing these buses to its fleet.

“We will observe the trials carefully. If everything goes well, Pune’s commuters will soon get to travel in electric double-decker buses,” said PMPML Chairman and Managing Director Pankaj Deore.

If approved, the buses are expected to improve public transport options for daily commuters in Pune’s growing IT hubs, providing a mix of efficiency, comfort, and modern design.
