A detailed plan for a proposed double-decker flyover at Laxmi Chowk in Pune’s Hinjawadi IT Park area has been prepared. However, the project, estimated to cost around ₹300 crore, is awaiting a decision on funding and which agency will be responsible for its construction.

Laxmi Chowk experiences heavy traffic congestion during morning and evening peak hours due to the large number of vehicles travelling to and from the Rajiv Gandhi Information Technology Park. IT employees, local residents and other commuters are among those affected.

Initially, a single-level flyover was planned to ease congestion. However, after former Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar suggested a double-decker flyover, a revised design was prepared.

The Public Works Department has submitted the detailed project plan to the district collector’s office. Considering traffic approaching the junction from three directions, the design includes a grade separator, a Y-shaped flyover and an underground route. Four traffic-management options were studied before one was selected for the proposed project.

According to the plan, vehicles coming from Bhumkar Chowk will be able to use the flyover to travel towards Kasarsai and Hinjawadi IT Park. The proposed arrangement is expected to reduce pressure on the junction and improve traffic flow.

However, the project cannot move forward until the funding arrangement and construction responsibilities are finalised. Once these decisions are made, the next stages of the project can proceed.

Until then, IT employees and local residents will have to wait longer for a possible long-term solution to the traffic congestion at Laxmi Chowk.
