The project has made progress after 17 of the 23 stations received safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS). This has brought the metro line closer to starting passenger services.
According to reports, senior officials from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and the metro project have also held a meeting to discuss the next steps. However, the inauguration date and the initial operational stretch have not yet been officially confirmed.
The metro line is around 23.2 km long and is expected to benefit IT employees working in Hinjewadi, along with commuters travelling to and from Baner, Balewadi, Aundh and Shivajinagar.
Initially, 12 stations received safety clearance. Following inspections of five more stations, the total number of approved stations increased to 17.
PMRDA is working to address the technical requirements raised during the safety inspection. Completing these requirements is an important step towards starting passenger services.
However, six stations are still awaiting clearance. It remains unclear whether the entire 23-station corridor will open at once or whether services will initially operate only on the approved section.
The possible November 3 inauguration has raised hopes among Pune residents, particularly those who travel daily to Hinjewadi’s IT Park. Road congestion during peak hours often makes these journeys time-consuming.
Once operational, the metro is expected to offer an alternative to road transport for commuters travelling between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar. Passengers from Balewadi, Aundh and the university area may also benefit, depending on the stations opened for service.
However, the actual impact on traffic congestion will become clear only after regular metro operations begin. Reliable services, passenger safety and timely operations will be key to making the project useful for daily commuters.
The project has faced delays due to several challenges, including traffic management issues, land acquisition, station site requirements and pending approvals from different departments.
The clearance granted to 17 stations marks an important step forward. The next stage will depend on completing the remaining work, resolving technical issues and securing approval for the other stations.
For now, commuters are waiting for an official announcement confirming the inauguration date and the stations that will be open when services begin.
